Cliff End

View from Cliff End Overlooking Colwell BayThe Cliff End site is situated on high ground with stunning panoramic views towards Yarmouth Bay, Afton Down, Tennyson Down, Colwell Bay, the Needles, the Solent and Hurst Castle on the Main Land. It is located on a quiet peninsular on the west side of the Island a short distance to the west of Yarmouth.

There are many footpaths in West Wight so it is a very good area for walking and relaxing generally. The Coastal Footpath which goes right round the whole island is very easily accessed from the bungalow.

Although the site is made up of privately owned holiday homes there are on-site sports facilities for activities for community use which include netball, 5-a-side football, petanque/boules, crazy golf, putting green, pitch & putt plus a large open grassed area for general use.

There is a shop which is well stocked for most holiday needs such as groceries, newspapers, beach toys, ice creams, etc. behind the Site Office Reception block. Next to the shop is a small launderette for holiday visitors to use.

View from Cliff End Overlooking The Solent & Hurst CastleOriginally Cliff End, where The Solent narrows between Hurst Castle on the Main Land and Fort Albert on the IOW, was used as a coastal defence around the late 18th century to protect the UK shores from the threat of Napoleonic invasion.

Then in 1859 more fortified defences were constructed which were consistently maintained until 1957. Sometime then after the site was sold for the development of holiday bungalows. Nowadays, the remains of part of the Cliff End Battery can be seen behind the bungalow.

Located only a short distance from Cliff End in 50 acres of woodland is the Fort Victoria Country Park where there is a model railway layout comprising continental as well as British trains that is the biggest and most sophisticated in Britain, a Marine Aquarium and the Sunken History Exhibition.

Other indoor attractions in the country park include an underwater archaeology centre, a cafe and the Island Planetarium & Resources Centre.

In nearby Yarmouth, situated on the waterfront and overlooking the Solent, is Yarmouth Castle which is one of Henry VIII's coastal defences that was built in 1547. The castle is now an English Heritage site with a Coastal Defences exhibition.
